It has been four good years overall for Maryland guard Greivis Vasquez. Certainly he’ll be remembered as one of the Terps greats, though I’m not sure in the Top 10.
But, Vasquez has never been to a Sweet 16. The Terps begin the NCAA Tournament tomorrow with a fair chance of advancing two rounds.
My Washington Examiner [...]

Can Vasquez exit with a legacy?
Kentucky to win the NCAA Tournament
Need help with your bracket? Take Kentucky all the way over Kansas.
My Washington Examiner column runs down the NCAA Tournament, especially Maryland and Georgetown. I have a 10-star upset special involving a 12th seed, too.
Don’t forget to send me 10 percent when winning your office pool.
Take the chalk and take Kentucky to win the title
Terps are a Sweet 16 candidate
Maryland gained a soft No. 4 seed to get Houston in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday. Thanks CBS for the 10 p.m. start. Maryland would then likely meet Michigan State on Sunday in a tough but winnable game.
But, my Washington Examiner column says that’s where it ends because the Sweet 16 [...]
Selection Sunday shouldn’t reach 96 teams
The NCAA will consider expanding the men’s basketball tournament from 65 to 96 teams during summer meetings. I hope the heat doesn’t overcome rational thought.
My Washington Examiner column says the NCAA is merely trying to grow it’s $6 billion deal through a bidding war between CBS and ESPN. They don’t care about the students given [...]
Terps ready for ACC Tournament
History says it will be a short stay. The NCAA Tournament is so much more important to Maryland that it doesn’t go all out in the conference tourney.
My Washington Examiner column remembers why the ACC gets the short shrift in the postseason tourneys.
An opening act these days
Maybe Gilchrist debacle helped Vasquez
Remember John Gilchrist, the Maryland guard whose career collapsed after winning the 2004 ACC Tournament MVP? Didn’t think so. He came back for a terrible final year before leaving early to play in a string of overseas leagues and ending last season hurt inĀ Australia.
Greivis Vasquez took the opposite approach. After also thinking of leaving [...]
Will it be Trader Bruce?
The Washington Redskins managed to sign a journeyman guard during the opening weekend of free agency. Bigger letdown than Christmas morning as an adult when getting clothes instead of toys.
My Washington Examiner column wonders if Bruce Allen will start trading veterans on the roster for draft picks, something his dad was known for back in [...]
Redskins slow out of free agency
The team that used to launch pre-dawn signings barely managed an old guard over two days. Minnesota’s Artie Hicks is a nice pickup to replace Randy Thomas, but nothing headline-grabbing like the Redskins norm.
My Washington Examiner column says the Redskins picked the wrong year to go conservative.
Redskins show restraint in free agency
Samuels retires, wants to coach
OK, I didn’t see this one coming exactly. I’ve long known Chris Samuels was retiring since injured Oct. 11. No surprise there. But, he wants to coach?
My Washington Examiner column discusses the Redskins 6-time Pro Bowler will become a Redskins coaching intern through training camp before hoping to catch on anywhere from preps to pros.
Samuels [...]
Snyder getting ready to burn some dough
The countdown is on. Free agency begins midnight Friday and the Washington Redskins are readying moves on Julius Peppers and several other leading free agents.
My Washington Examiner column runs down some possibilities as owner Dan Snyder has money to burn.
Snyder likely to buy into uncapped year
Vasquez exits with Duke on deck
You can’t ask for a bigger final career game than Duke tonight for Maryland senior guard Greivis Vasquez.
The Venezuelan was a delight to cover and watch. I’ll miss him, but there’s still one big game left. Can they rise to it? Maybe.
My Washington Examiner column compares Vasquez to the Terrapins greats.
Is Vasquez among Maryland’s elite?
Redskins and Campbell are stuck together
The Washington Redskins need a quarterback. It’s going to be Jason Campbell again, no matter what either wants.
My Washington Examiner column runs down why Campbell will remain in Washington this season. Maybe the Redskins draft a quarterback, but for now they’ll keep Campbell as a restricted free agent. It’s called hedging your bets.
For Redskins QB [...]
History says Redskins shouldn’t trade down
The Washington Redskins are scouting the NFL Combine through Sunday trying to decide who’s worthy of their No. 4 pick. Maybe a quarterback, maybe a left tackle.
But there are some whispers the Redskins may trade down. Bad idea. My Washington Examiner column explains why.
History proves the Redskins shouldn’t trade down
JFK first pitch at auction
One of the glory days of Camelot was John F. Kennedy throwing out the first pitch of Washington Senators season openers in 1961-63. Senators great Mickey Vernon, who retired to become the manager, caught those balls. Now one goes on auction on Saturday.
My Washington Examiner column remembers the special item along with Vernon’s daughter telling [...]
Will big names tempt Redskins?
LaDainian Tomlinson is on the market. So is Brian Westbrook. The Redskins could use a running back. But, the Redskins already have an aging diva like Tomlinson and one coming off a concussion like Westbrook.
My Washington Examiner column remembers when Redskins owner Dan Snyder would have signed the running backs. Now we’ll see who’s really [...]
Hold that Tiger, hold that Tiger
Tiger Woods took the hit. Maybe in a controlled atmosphere, but the world’s greatest golfer is still in rehab so there’s only so much you can beat on the guy at one time.
My Washington Examiner column says it’s time to let Tiger go on with his life. When he starts winning tournaments again, you know [...]
Gilbert and the Zeros?
The Washington Wizards may suit up some ushers for next season because all they received for three starters and two reserves was a couple distant draft choices and a a handful of expiring contracts.
My Washington Examiner columns explains why the Wiz needed to blow up the roster, and what ugly times are to come.
When it [...]
Redskins will be pressed to find free agents
The downside of an uncapped year is 212 free agents will be restricted instead of totally free. That means the Redskins would have to give up first- and third-rounders to sign one. And, that makes it one shallow free agent pool.
My Washington Examiner column discusses the few options Washington has to fill left tackle, cornerback, [...]
Wizards are unwatchable
After trading two starters and another one or two seemingly heading out of town by Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, the Washington Wizards are off my dial.
I can’t see watching another game. Why? To see players who won’t be here next year finish out an awful season?
My Washington Examiner column basically flames the organization as once [...]
