Now that Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen has named his successor, is he a lame duck with three years or so remaining? The Terps started spring practice with assistant James Franklin now squarely the next coach and with every loss this fall there will be cries form the stands to make Franklin the head coach now.
It was a gamble. Franklin might have been offered a head coaching job elsewhere and there would have been no succession plan as Friedgen’s tenure wound down, which is crucial in recruiting. After all, players sign on for five years, the last two often when many start. Not knowing who would be head coach by then would make some not come to College Park. But, it could also split fans and the team. And if the team loses regularly, will fans still want Franklin?
