I was checking my website counter last night and thought I mistakenly asked for the weekly number instead of daily. Nope — the world went wild over Michael Vick. Nearly every visitor from Google was about Vick and the Redskins.
OK, you want to know if the Redskins are interested in Vick. All I can say is there has been absolutely no indication of it. But, everyone knows how impulsive owner Dan Snyder can be so it’s always a possibility.
Here’s the problem with signing Vick, aside from the ton of negative public reaction. Don’t worry about that because the moment he throws touchdowns and wins games most fans will cheer him and forget about the dogs. The problem is Vick must come to training camp without any prep in the system. He might not even make the start of camp unless NFL commissioner Roger Goodell re-instates him immediately.
You can’t ask anyone to just show up at camp and start. Not at quarterback. The Redskins can’t gear their entire system on a moment’s notice to play the wildcat, either.
Next, what kind of football shape is Vick in? Maybe he’s in good physical shape if lifting weights in prison, but that’s far different from football shape.
And what kind of mental shape is he in? Two years in a federal prison is rough. That’s no country club Vick was in. So you wonder if he’s mentally ready to deal with everything.
That all said, Vick will play somewhere in the NFL. Teams are just wondering if he’s worth all the trouble. If Vick can return to his top level, then he is. Otherwise, it’s just spinning wheels.
