Admit it, with Kansas out you’re now thinking Maryland has a real shot at the Final Four. OK, I admit I suddenly think they can do it, too. Or, they could lose today against Michigan State.
My Washington Examiner column says the Terps big men will decide how much longer the team dances.

Terps big men now the key
Can Vasquez exit with a legacy?
It has been four good years overall for Maryland guard Greivis Vasquez. Certainly he’ll be remembered as one of the Terps greats, though I’m not sure in the Top 10.
But, Vasquez has never been to a Sweet 16. The Terps begin the NCAA Tournament tomorrow with a fair chance of advancing two rounds.
My Washington Examiner [...]
Terps are a Sweet 16 candidate
Maryland gained a soft No. 4 seed to get Houston in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday. Thanks CBS for the 10 p.m. start. Maryland would then likely meet Michigan State on Sunday in a tough but winnable game.
But, my Washington Examiner column says that’s where it ends because the Sweet 16 [...]
Terps ready for ACC Tournament
History says it will be a short stay. The NCAA Tournament is so much more important to Maryland that it doesn’t go all out in the conference tourney.
My Washington Examiner column remembers why the ACC gets the short shrift in the postseason tourneys.
An opening act these days
Maybe Gilchrist debacle helped Vasquez
Remember John Gilchrist, the Maryland guard whose career collapsed after winning the 2004 ACC Tournament MVP? Didn’t think so. He came back for a terrible final year before leaving early to play in a string of overseas leagues and ending last season hurt in Australia.
Greivis Vasquez took the opposite approach. After also thinking of leaving [...]
Vasquez exits with Duke on deck
You can’t ask for a bigger final career game than Duke tonight for Maryland senior guard Greivis Vasquez.
The Venezuelan was a delight to cover and watch. I’ll miss him, but there’s still one big game left. Can they rise to it? Maybe.
My Washington Examiner column compares Vasquez to the Terrapins greats.
Is Vasquez among Maryland’s elite?
Terps have shot in scrambled ACC
The ACC looks as uncertain as it has been in years with North Carolina already losing three straight and Virginia rising from the dead. But Maryland has looked as good as I’ve seen them since 2003 with the last of the national championship crew.
My Washington Examiner column discusses why the ACC has gone topsy-turvy.
The ACC [...]
Davidson was more than race fixer
My Washington Examiner column remembers Maryland-Charles Town jockey Jesse Davidson, who died Sunday at age 69.
Davidson was among four riders convicted of fixing a sporting event in what became known as the 1975 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre at Bowie. Davidson’s brother bet a triple 38 times that paid $35,000 total with the four riders not [...]
ESPN remembers Len Bias
Was Len Bias a one-time cocaine user who dropped dead or a user who went too far?
Without Bias premiers Tuesday at 8 p.m. on ESPN. I covered this story 23 years ago and it remains the biggest of my 31-year career. I watch Bias play in high school and the University of Maryland. Good guy, [...]
Maryland remembers Jack Heise
The Terps may never have another backer like Jack Heise. Oh, some may donate more money to Maryland, but none will likely ever spend a lifetime supporting the teams more than Heise, who even married a Terps cheerleader.
Maryland remembered the 1947 graduate before Saturday’s 20-7 loss to Virginia with not a moment of silence, but [...]
How to measure the Terps
Maryland was supposed to get smashed by California as a 22-point dog, and the Terps did. The real measure, as Rocky says in his last movie to a selfish child, is not about getting knocked down, but about getting back up. That’s Maryland’s task against James Madison on Saturday.
My Washington Examiner column shows how the [...]
Sunshine Cali heads home
Maryland quarterback Chris Turner is now a senior, no longer the Napolean Dynamite “dude” character of an underclassman. You see a more grown up person who should be the Terrapins best passer since Boomer Esiason a generation ago.
My Washington Examiner column has Turner discussing the change in him from living amongst us Easterners (funny, I [...]
Redskins add 13 rookies
The Washington Redskins quickly signed 13 rookie free agents. Obviously, Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel stands out, though I don’t see him making the team. He’d have to beat out Colt Brennan and that’s not happening. Maryland offensive tackle Scott Burley has a chance. Should have been drafted. One tough guy. Maryland center Edwin Williams will [...]
The only Mystics note you’ll see me write
I’ve never covered the WNBA team, but like all Washington sports I keep at least passable interest in the Mystics. They have been horrible for their 11 years. That’s about to change.
The Mystics drafted Maryland’s Marissa Coleman on Thursday. The local was the best player on the Terps 2006 national champion team who can play [...]
Heyward-Bey sprinting to high draft status
Maryland receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey ran an official 2.3 in the 40 at the NFL Combine, but some teams had him in 2.5. Meanwhile, Baltimore brought a big group to see him work out in College Park, including quarterback Joe Flacco to throw to him.
Sounds like Heyward-Bey could go somewhere between 15-25 in the draft. He’s [...]
King Ralph still runs Maryland football
Now that Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen has named his successor, is he a lame duck with three years or so remaining? The Terps started spring practice with assistant James Franklin now squarely the next coach and with every loss this fall there will be cries form the stands to make Franklin the head coach [...]
Kristi Toliver bades Comcast farewell
Maryland guard Kristi Toliver plays her final game on Tuesday at Comcast Center in the NCAA Tournament second-rounder versus Utah.
The program will miss her. Toliver hit the shot that sent Maryland into overtime when later winning the 2006 national title. She has been a terrific player for four seasons, maybe the best ever in College [...]
Terps look like real contender
The women’s team is a No. 1 seed and didn’t have any problems beating Dartmouth in the first round. Actually, they won’t face a real contender until Baylor in the Elite Eight.
My Washington Examiner column today shows how the Terps are trying not to overthink things in the early rounds.
Maryland wants to keep it simple
Yow-Williams feud — old news
Thw Washington Post chose to bring up the Gary Williams-Debbie Yow feud on the morning of the Maryland-Memphis second-round game.
Really, that’s all you’ve got?
Yow and Williams have feuded for years. It got ugly in February when the team was losing and Yow’s office started barking at the coach in public. It was stupid and [...]
Terps win, Terps win
Now don’t you feel foolish saying Gary Williams couldn’t coach anymore? Now Maryland is in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Quite a difference a month makes.
Maryland played a smart game in pretty much leading all the way and pulling away late to rout California. I knew any team that was 16-2 at home [...]
