Scouting the Redskins 4th pick

Do the Redskins go with a quarterback at No. 4 in Sam Bradford or take an offensive tackle in Russell Okung?
Those are just a couple options as Washington spends the next three months deciding that question only to maybe see someone grab the person they want in the first three picks.
My Washington Examiner column discusses [...]

Redskins draft so-so, but

At least Washington gained one very good player — Brian Orakpo. However, they may be all they gained. Typical of the Redskins, they found nothing in the late rounds. Kevin Barnes of Maryland might have been a reach in the third round, but at least he’ll play some this fall. The last four picks may [...]

Day 2 is doomsday for Redskins

The Redskins finally did the right thing and stayed put to find a good player with the 13th pick. But, day 2 in the draft for owner Dan Snyder has been pretty miserable.
Since buying the team in 1999, Snyder (who runs the draft despite saying otherwise) has found two decent players — Rock Cartwright and [...]

Will the Redskins get Mark Sanchez?

Sorry, you want Jimmy the Greek for wild picks and he’s no longer available.
My Washington Examiner column runs down the half dozen options the Redskins are considering in Saturday’s NFL draft, including a trade to get Mark Sanchez. Most probably — they take whose left on their board when picking at No. 13.
Skins look to [...]

NFL draft is liar’s poker

Believe nothing you hear in the next week over the NFL draft. It’s all lies, damn lies and more lies.
Mark Sanchez seems to be the central figure in the smoke and mirrors game. The Redskins would love him at 13, but Seattle at 4 and Cleveland at 5 plus even the Jets at 17 could [...]

Darrius Heyward-Bey to Oakland?

The Maryland receiver is a sudden riser in the draft. I’m not sure Darrius Heyward-Bey’s a first-round player, but he’s faster than blazes and a workout warrior so I’m sure the Terp’s going in the first round now.
But where? Baltimore would love him at 26, even bringing quarterback Joe Flacco to throw to Heyward-Bey [...]

Heyward-Bey sprinting to high draft status

Maryland receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey ran an official 2.3 in the 40 at the NFL Combine, but some teams had him in 2.5. Meanwhile, Baltimore brought a big group to see him work out in College Park, including quarterback Joe Flacco to throw to him.
Sounds like Heyward-Bey could go somewhere between 15-25 in the draft. He’s [...]

Lots going on at NFL meetings

Pay attention over the next three days. Some important issues are being debated at the NFL meetings.
1. Jay Cutler trade. Maybe Washington gets him, maybe it doesn’t, but everybody’s in the same room.
2. Season expansion to 18 games. The NFL is thinking about 18 regular-season games and 2 preseason games. Some talk about [...]

Who will the Redskins draft?

Beats me.  Oh wait, I’m supposed to know.
Everyone figured a defensive tackle until they signed Albert Haynesworth. Now, it could be an offensive tackle, a defensive end, maybe even a linebacker.
I run down the options in my Washington Examiner column today.
Who will Skins target in draft?

Redskins mock draft: Everette Brown

Florida State defensive end Everette Brown is a possible first-rounder for the Washington Redskins, especially if they drop back a little from 13th. Mel Kiper has Brown going 15th to Houston, but let’s see what the 6-foot-4, 252-pounder does in the NFL Combine next month. Maryland fans know Brown is quick, but can he handle [...]

Mel Kiper: Redskins take Brian Orakpo

Let the draft games begin. When it comes to mock drafts, Mel Kiper is the source. Not that he’s always right, but he’s the first one you listen to since it consumes his life.
Kiper’s mock first round  (actually, half round) is on ESPN. Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford goes first to Detroit. The poor guy.
Texas defensive [...]

VIDEO: 2009 NFL mock draft

Anybody can ask Mel Kiper. Here’s a couple guys on YouTube who give it a try. Just shows anybody can do this and everybody can watch.
They think a linebacker will go No. 13 to the Redskins. They’re nuts.
