How can 9/11 be a distant memory?

A Washington Post story today on kids studying the Sept. 11 attacks that are too young to really remember them infuriated me.
The Indiana teacher showed a multi-media lesson on the attacks and when the lights when down, one student said, “Nap time.” Their notes later showed they didn’t know or care what 9/11 was.
They’re kids [...]

Redskins won’t put grandma in poorhouse

In the continuing nightmare the Redskins put themselves in by suing defaulting suite holders, the 72-year-old grandmother who said she would have to declare bankruptcy because the team won a $66,000 judgment against her now says the team has excused the debt.
Score 1 for decency.
The Washington Post, which broke the scandal this week of the [...]

Is this the beginning of end for Redskins dynasty?

If we look back at 1969 as the year the Redskins took over the town, will we look back on 2009 as the time when the fans finally started walking away?
My Washington Examiner column details why the recent ticket scandal and lawsuits versus fans who didn’t finish deals for premium seats might be the final [...]

Redskins versus fans — no winners

Just read both days of the Redskins ticket stories in The Washington Post. What a mess.
First, nobody is in favor of the Redskins selling to brokers. And, let’s just say nobody believes it was employees acting independently.
Second, let’s move on to the team suing ticket holders for non-payment. Frankly, the team is in the [...]

The great Samu and Redskins letters

Normally I don’t mention Washington Post stories after a lifetime of competing against them, but Sunday’s magazine insert is written by a friend of mine. Samu Qureshi is the greatest Redskins collector out there. I mean, the absolute leader by a mile.
Samu and his wife Val penned a long piece on late Redskins owner [...]

Radio wars heighten

Thom Loverro of the Washington Times will go against Mike Wise of the Washington Post from 12-2 weekdays — Loverro now with ESPN-980 and Wise at 106.7-The Fan.
Loverro is my former colleague at the Times before I left in 2005 for the Examiner. He’ll kick Wise’s butt off the dial. Lovey is a gamer, Wise [...]

An awesome Star-Spangled banner

Glenn Donnellan, who plays violin for the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, made his own instrument from a baseball bat. There’s talk the Nationals may use him to play before one game, which would make their sorry evenings almost worthwhile.
Donnellan was profiled in the Washington Post after seeing his video on YouTube.
A friend gave me [...]

Some random thoughts around town

Some scumbag steroids dealer makes open-ended accusations of selling to Nationals and Capitals players and is given widespread play. This is what’s wrong with the new media. Suddenly, someone with no evidence has two teams playing defense, and we know how badly the Nats play defense.
Everyone couldn’t rush this story to the top fast enough [...]

Loeb’s Deli turns 50

There is a terrific story on Loeb’s Deli on 15th and I Sts. NW you should read. I met Dave Loeb in the mid-1980s when we worked at The Washington Times. Dave eventually returned to the family business, which is an old-fashioned New York Jewish deli. This place makes food unlike anything else in town. [...]

Chico Harlan has much to learn

Washington Post baseball writer Chico Harlan was forced to apologize over his comments in Washingtonian magazine that he hated sports, was embarassed to cover it and is just earning a paycheck until something better comes along.
Wow, that was pretty stupid to say publicly.
I’ve been a sports writer in Washington for 31 years. Only [...]

Rijo fired? Bowden next?

The Washington Post reports Jose Rijo has been fired over this whole Alvarez/Gonzales mess when the Nationals paid a $1.4 million bonus to the Dominican shortstop who’s really four years older and much less valuable.
Rijo admits the Nats saying he was an extended leave of absence last week was bull as anyone sane knew, but [...]
